If you are working through your IXL Math membership, you’ve probably hit those levels where the numbers suddenly turn into letters. Whether you are trying to reach that 100 SmartScore in Level H or Level J, Roman numerals can be the “boss battle” of number sense.
Don’t let a subtraction rule reset your progress! Use this guide to master the symbols and get back to your winning streak.
1. The “Big Seven” (Memorize These!)
To ace IXL, you have to know these seven letters by heart. Everything else is just a combination of these:
| Roman Numeral | Value | Pro-Tip |
| I | 1 | Think of a single finger. |
| V | 5 | The “V” shape between your thumb and fingers. |
| X | 10 | Two “V”s stacked on top of each other. |
| L | 50 | Think “L” for “Low” half-century. |
| C | 100 | “C” stands for Centum (like Century). |
| D | 500 | Think of a Demi-thousand (Half). |
| M | 1,000 | “M” stands for Mille (like Millennium). |
2. The “Rule of Three” (Avoid the Trap!)
IXL will often try to trick you with this. You can never use the same symbol more than three times in a row.
- Correct: XXX = 30
- Incorrect: XXXX = 40 (For 40, you have to use the Subtraction Rule!)
3. The Subtraction Rule (The SmartScore Saver)
This is where most students lose points on IXL. If a smaller number comes before a larger number, you subtract it.
- IV: $5 – 1 = 4
- IX: $10 – 1 = 9
- XL: $50 – 10 = 40
- XC: $100 – 10 = 90
- CM: $1,000 – 100 = 900
Quick Cheat: If you see IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, or CM, stop and subtract!
4. Practice: 2026 in Roman Numerals
Since we are in 2026, this is a common question in modern math challenges. Here is how you break it down:
- $2,000 = MM
- $20 = XX
- $6 = VI
- Result: MMXXVI
